Horst Ludwig Wessel was an ardent Nazi and joined the NSDAP in 1926 at the age of 19. He composed the extremely popular song Die Fahne Hoch! (Hold High the Flag!) which is to this day instantly identifiable with Hitler and his Third Reich. It was the virtual anthem of the Nazi Party and Nazi Germany. He was only 23 when he was murdered fighting communists in Berlin on 23 February 1930, and this song was renamed the Horst Wessel Lied (Horst Wessel Song) in his honor. It is still known by this name today.
