In July 1937 the format of the Nazi art magazine
Die Kunst im Dritten Reich was changed to 11 x 14 inches, the size most Third Reich collectors are familiar with.
Issues 1 through six of Die Kunst im Dritten Reich were published in a smaller size (8-1/4 x 11-1/4 inch - 28 x 35 cm) by Gauleiter Adolf Wagner and published by Professor Klein, architect Albert Speer and Professor Leonhard Gall at the Nazi Party's Central Publishing House, Franz Eher Nachfolger in München (Munich). When the magazine became a hit and the National Socialist government wanted to feature more art by German artists in the new and larger
Reich, the magazine became bigger, glossier and had more color pages. In 1939 the name was changed to
Die Kunst im Deutschen Reich. The magazine eventually became THE national art magazine in Hitler's Germany.
For sale on this USMBOOKS web page is the 68-page
July/August 1937 double issue of
Die Kunst im Dritten Reich (Doppelnummer Folge 7 / 8), the first large size (11 x 14 inch) issue of the beautiful Third Reich art magazine. It is a
Sonderheft or special double edition for the opening of the House of German Art in Munich and the
1937 Greater German Art Exhibition held in the new museum.
Only 8000 examples of this July/August 1937 double issue of Die Kunst im Dritten Reich were printed at a cost of RM2 each. Almost all examples have been long lost to history.
In an even more rare insert (almost nobody knows there ever was an insert) the reasons for new magazine format are explained and the content of the next issue is advertised (continuation of coverage of the 1937 Greater German Art Exhibition in the House of German Art in Munich as well as German participation in the
1937 Paris World Exposition). The mission statement of the publisher is at the bottom of the introduction:
Love Beauty, Perpetuate Growth and Preserve Greatness! (see photo next to cover).
After a foreword by Adolf Hitler the magazine starts with a photo article about the new
Haus der deutschen Kunst in Munich. Great photos shows architectural details on the inside and outside of the building. There are photos of architect Professor Paul Ludwig Troost and his wife Gerdy Troost, Adolf Hitler sketching a drawing, Hitler with Professor Gall, Hitler and Gauleiter Wagner looking at a model of the House of German Art, the old
Glaspalast that burned down and the progress of the building of the new museum (foundation stone all the way to the opening).
Many of these photos can not be found elsewhere!
Hitler is shown during the official opening of the 1937 Grosse deutsche Kunstausstellung (the Greater German Art Exhibition of 1937) with Gauleiter Adolf Wagner, Hermann Göring, Frau Gerdy Troost, Goebbels, Hess, etc.
There are photos of early Nazi art festivals, as well as designs for floats for the
1937 Tag der deutschen Kunst and striking color pictures of the parade itself.
There is advertising by companies that worked on and/or supplied materials and equipment for the House of German Art in the back.
This very rare Nazi art magazine is complete and in very good used condition. The cover shows some wear and the spine is scotch taped, but the interior pages are in great shape.
