Westfront-Illustrierte (WJ) or Westfront Illustrated was an oversized magazine published by German soldiers for German soldiers in France during World War II, handed out free of charge. Because the magazines circulated from one soldier to another, finding good examples in the 21st century is a difficult thing to do.
This copy is Issue Number 8, Weihnachten (Christmas) 1940 and measures 10-3/4 x 14 inch and contains 112 pages with a great many photographs and illustrations, color and black & white and some tipped-in pictures on heavy paper.
The subject matter is exactly what soldiers wanted to read about. The introductory article on the rhythm of the war was written by Generalfeldmarschall Walter von Reichenau and there is a beautiful tipped-in charcoal portrait of him with a protective velum sheet. There are many pictures of Wehrmacht soldiers and what they do at Christmas time, a photo feature on Panzers on the attack, pictures of German soldiers in Paris, a feature on German motorcycle troops, another on painter Paul Padua, the bombardment of England, the soldier sculptor Kurt Zimmermann, contrasting photos of the German surrender in World War I and the French surrender at Compiègne in 1940, field artillery in action, unit insignia, flyers at war,
Feldpost packages, etc.
There is a heavily photographic, very special article about proxy weddings between soldiers in hospitals or at the front and how they were able to marry a woman back home without being there. The ceremony was conducted under the supervision of a Nazi bureaucrat and was formalized with the usual exchange of rings and the presentation of a copy of a wedding edition of Adolf Hitler's
Mein Kampf.
This original 72 year old issue of Westfront-Illustrierte contains very rare Third Reich photo material, and is in very good used condition.
