If one was only going to buy a single book on Third Reich "Nazi" architecture and sculpture, this would be the one to buy. ARCHITEKTUR UND BAUPLASTIK DER GEGENWART (Architecture and Building Sculptures of the Present) is a substantial, beautifully printed 8-1/2 x 10-3/4 inch, 160 page, very heavily illustrated, linen bound hardcover book by Werner Rittisch and from the edition published by Rembrandt-Verlag in Berlin in 1939 (contains the New Reichschancellery in Berlin). As it was published prior to the start of World War II it is on better paper and better bound than later books treating the same subject.
Werner Rittisch provides a very comprehensive and learned text interspersed throughout the 170 pictures, mostly full-page plates. The text of course, is in German but quite easily read as the author ties the new Third Reich arts of architecture and architectural decoration to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. He even references the book
Mein Kampf.
Photographically the book is very well done and includes the works of architects and sculptors like Albert Speer, Josef Thorak, Arno Breker, Kurt Schmid-Ehmen, Paul Ludwig Troost, Hermann Giesler, Werner March, Fritz Klimsch, Clemens Klotz, Willy Meller, Ernst Sagebiel, Georg Kolbe, Adolf Wamper, German Bestelmeyer, etc., etc.
Some of the projects superbly illustrated in this book are the Hitler's
Neue Reichskanzlei in Berlin, the
Reichsautobahn (German freeways), the
Nazi Party Day Grounds in
Nürnberg, the
Führerbau and
Ehrentempel in München, the
1937 World Exhibition in Paris, Ordensburg Vogelsang, Ordensburg Sonthofen, Ordensburg Crössensee,
1936 Olympic Stadium in Berlin,
Dietrich Eckart Bühne,
Reichsehrenmal Tannenberg, the
Reichsluftfahrtministerium in Berlin,
Luftgaukommando Dresden, the
Reichszeugmeisterei in Munich,
Hitler Youth Homes, the
Marinebauverwaltung in Kiel,
Fliegerhorsts in various locations, the Hermann Göring
Meisterschule for Painting in the Eifel,
Jagdhaus Döllnsee and
Carinhall on the Schorfheide, Rominten, a number of new planned communities
(Siedlung), farms, factories, private homes, etc., etc.
This is about as good as it gets in terms of single-volume books devoted exclusively to Nazi architecture. This rare Nazi book is in very fine condition and comes with the very rare original Third Reich dust jacket.

AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF ARCHITEKTUR UND
