Mann an der Fahne, Kameraden erzählen von Dr.Ley is a fine Third Reich book of stories about Dr. Robert Ley as told by his comrades and compiled by Walter Kiehl.

Robert Ley, Reichsorganisationsleiter and DAF Reichsleiter, was the genius behind most of the organization of the Nazi Party. As Reichs Organization Leader he was responsible for the publication of the Organisationsbuch der NSDAP which outlined how every Nazi paramilitary unit from the SS to the Hitler Youth was organized, what uniforms they wore and what their mission was. As Leader of the Deutsche Arbeitsfront he built the Ordensburg Castles at Vogelsang, Crössensee and Sonthofen. He built the towns and factories that produced everything from Volkswagens to tanks and airplanes to ships and plywood, and he oversaw every laborer that worked on the Reichsautobahn.

This is a 5-½ x 8-½ inch, 304-page Third Edition of Mann an der Fahne, Kameraden erzählen von Dr.Ley with blue and gold linen hard covers and embossed gold blocking on the spine. It was published in 1938 by the Central Publishing House of the Nazi Party, Franz Eher Nachfolger in Munich. The 83 year old book is in very good, little used condition. No odor.
Ley was the emotional soul of the German economy and labor force according to the author. He says that Dr. Ley embodied the new spirit of practical economic thinking, and his enthusiasm and hard work should inspire every German citizen to work for the future of Nazi Germany.

The chapters written by Dr. Ley’s comrades have a photo of the person who recounts their experiences or encounter with Dr. Ley and include Stabsleiter Heinrich Simon, Joseph Bosbach, Josef Grohé, SA-Obersturmbannführer Josef Schneider, and Richard Schaffer. There are chapters about Dr. Ley’s trips to Italy, DAF gatherings, visiting the Krupp factory and other German industrial giants, etc., etc.

Interspersed in the text are many photos printed on glossy art paper. The first one is a photo of a Robert-Ley-Strasse street sign opposite the title page. Other photos show Ley with Hitler, Rudolf Hess, Ley in his World War I uniform and with his mother, during early Nazi election rallies, Ley with students at an Adolf-Hitler-School, Ley with Alfred Rosenberg, Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, Dr. Goebbels and Hermann Göring, with alte Kämpfer, etc., etc.

Mann an der Fahne (The Flag Bearer) is a book about the life of Dr. Ley, one of the brightest and busiest high-ranking National Socialists and government ministers of the German Nation. As it says in the foreword this is not a ‘dry’ biography, but a story covering the many different stages of Ley’s life, focussing on his important role as the leader of the Deutsche Arbeitsfront, the DAF which was aorta of production, creation and output of Nazi Germany and therefor the engine of growth and the wealth of the country.
Almost no one today gives Ley the credit he deserves as the organizational genius behind the many successes of Third Reich Germany.
There are also illustrations of documents that accompanied awards Dr. Robert Ley received, letters from the Führer, newspaper headlines as well as posters announcing Dr. Ley speeches. The one on page 114 (shown left) is interesting, as it shows Dr. Ley was sharing the stage with Julius Streicher and the theme of the rally was “the hand of Judas weighs heavy on the Nation”.
