Zeitgeschichte in Wort und Bild (Contemporary History in Words and Pictures) is a truly remarkable, big 7-1/2 x 10-1/4 inch set of three very heavily illustrated anti-Semitic Nazi era books in wonderful condition. The three books together are 6 inches thick and contain more than 1600 pages. They were published between 1931 and 1934 and look like they were printed yesterday, they are in such nice condition. The material in the books was assembled by Reichsarchivrat Georg Soldan and published by Alleinige Vertriebstelle in München, a Nazi Party affiliate.

As the title implies, the books attempt to examine in words and pictures, the history of Germany since World War I. It is not an accident that this is also the period of the Nazi rise to power in Germany.

The books contain all pertinent information about the end of Imperial Russia and the end of World War I, focussing heavily on the foreign occupation of parts of Germany, the street battles between the Nazis and the communists and Jews, the communist victories in many German cities and the resulting popularity of Adolf Hitler and the National-Sozialistische Deutsche Arbeiter-Partei (Nazi Party). The period of run-away inflation of the German Mark and the growth of Freikorps units in southern Germany is heavily covered.

A great deal is said about the disarmament of the nation of Germany and the inhumanity of black colonial French occupation troops in the Rhineland and elsewhere in Germany. There is a lot of information about the war reparations that eventually bankrupted the country of Germany, and a good deal of space in Zeitgeschichte in Wort und Bild is devoted to the rise of Benito Mussolini in Fascist Italy.

Words and photos depict the first “Party Day” of the NSDAP in Munich in January 1923. There are photos of unemployed Germans, troops in the streets and the growth of the SA after Hitler’s release from Landsberg prison. With the success of the Nazis in parliament there is new emphasis on industries like trains, ships, automobiles, zeppelins, aircraft, housing, etc. with photographs of all of them.

A great deal of the material, both in word and picture, dwells on the National Socialist belief that Germany’s problems were the result of the country’s manipulation by international communists and Jews. A lot of the content is an explanation of how Hitler and the Nazis successfully overcame virtually insurmountable political and social obstacles to gain power in the country.

The photo content of Zeitgeschichte in Wort und Bild is remarkable with many, many pictures of people like Hitler, Goebbels, Göring, Horst Wessel, and other Nazi Party notables not found elsewhere. There are also remarkable photographs of virtually every opposition leader and opposition paramilitary organizations among the thousands of photos in these three books.

Many photographs depict the national jubilation that overtook Germany in the wake of victory of the Nazi Party politically in 1933.  Interspersed in the text and photos in these books are many, many full-page, full-color reproductions of Nazi campaign posters from the post-WW1 and National Socialist victory eras in Germany.

For anyone writing or publishing on the pre-Nazi and Nazi era in Germany, these books are absolutely essential. Rare material in very, very good condition.
