Gute Kameraden is a rare heavily color illustrated Third Reich reading book. “Good Comrades” was published in 1935 and 1940, and this is the 6-½ x 9 inch, 94 page hardcover 1935 edition with illustrations by Ernst Kutzer.
This Nazi elementary school book was produced to teach young German children how to read. The text is in Fraktur and in Sütterlin Schrift and is filled with subtle and not so subtle National Socialist content, not defaced in any way. Note the HJ boy and BdM girl on the front cover!
The well-done illustrations depict young, happy looking German girls and boys playing and hiking, with their pets, admiring Hitler-Soldaten, waving at a Zeppelin, throwing snow balls as well as German laborers after their shift, St. Nicolas, a lit up Christmas tree, toy soldiers with Nazi swastika armbands, etc.
The book is missing seven of its pages, page page 3/4, page 21/22, page 27/28, page 37/38, page 39/40, page 41/42, and page 43/44. The spine was repaired with professional blue book tape, and the front and back fly leaf are replacements. However, the rare 90 year old Nazi book has no odor. Our price reflects condition.
There are illustrated chapters explaining different professions such as bakers, blacksmiths, shoe repair men, chimney sweeps and people working in factories. There is a chapter about the Hitlerjugend, visiting grandparents, vacation, Christmas and Easter, accidents and the Schupo, etc., etc.
This 90 year old Nazi children’s reading book was published and printed by W. Crüwell in Dortmund in 1935. Like so many Third Reich school and children’s books this one was heavily used! About 15 pages have old professional repairs with white book tape to the corners and / or edges of the pages. We suspect they were most likely made by a teacher to extend the life of the book.
