During the mid - to - late 1930s nobody in Europe had a race car research and development program that even came close to the enormous success of the Mercedes-Benz effort. The friendship between Germany’s 23rd Chancellor Adolf Hitler and Mercedes-Benz director Jakob Werlin, combined with Hitler’s pride in and endorsement of Mercedes-Benz products, set the stage for the resurgence and European dominance of the Stuttgart-Untertürkenheim based car and truck manufacturer.
The photographs depict the very latest high-tech Mercedes-Benz race cars at rest and at full throttle at race venues in Europe and Africa, the best of the Mercedes-Benz drivers and pit crews, the Mercedes-Benz race car support caravan, race car transports and even Hitler’s Mercedes-Benz friend, Jakob Werlin.
By 1935 Mercedes-Benz race car drivers like Rudolf Caracciola, Manfred von Brauchitsch, Luigi Fagioli (shown left) and others under the leadership of Rennleiter Neubauer were dominating races held in places like Pescara, Nürburgring, Tripoli, Spa, Avus, Monza, Monte Carlo, Montlhery, Eifel, etc.
The Mercedes-Benz racing division produced a special desk calendar in a size of 6-3/4 x 10-1/4 inches in which each page contained a beautiful race photo measuring about 4 x 6 inches. At the bottom of each page was a grid of boxes for each of three days subdivided into hourly segments from 8 to 18 (08:00 am to 6:00 pm) hours.
The calendar we offer here is complete with original plain gray covers and blue linen spine, and contains 65 pages covering the period from 20 June 1936 through 31 December 1936. In addition there is a full year calendar for 1936 and 1937, a full-page of German postal information, and photo credits.
The book-like calendar also contains a pre-addressed postcard bound-in, to make it easy for the owner to order similar calendar pads or blocks for the year 1937.
Only one page of this calendar shows any use - the one for 26, 27 and 28 December has a one-line note below the picture (shown left), written in pencil by the same hand that wrote the notes on the front cover (shown below). Very rare and in very good condition. No odor.
