This nice original First Edition of Wir Arbeitsmaiden, a photo book by Gustav von Estorff about the Arbeitsdienstpflicht or obligatory labor service for young girls in Nazi Germany. The 7-½ x 10-½ inch, 64-page softcover Bildbericht was published by Zeitgeschichte-Verlag of Berlin in 1940. The foreword is by Asta von Larisch who was a Department Leader in the Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD or Nazi State Labor Service). In it she explains that the book shows the daily life of young German girls during their year of Arbeitsdienstpflicht, thereby making it a lasting memory for all German girls who did their share for the Fatherland.
BdM girls
The clear, full- and half-page black & white photographs in Wir Arbeitsmaiden show young women at work, helping farmers during the harvest and mothers with children whose husbands were away at the front, in RAD barracks and on trains, in work clothes and wearing their RAD uniforms, doing laundry and washing windows, receiving political education by a female Reichsarbeitsdienst leader, hiking, dancing and playing sports, etc.
There are even photos taken during the Nazi Party Days in Nuremberg, showing Adolf Hitler and Reichsarbeitsführer Konstantin Hierl greeting leaders of the Arbeitsdienst für die weibliche Jugend as well as the raising of the RAD flag during a massive Reichsarbeitsdienst gathering at the Zeppelinfeld.
The last page has a synopsis of the Nazi Labor Service - when it was founded, its purpose, number of people who served, leadership and education.
This book was owned by Arbeitsmaiden Fritsch who had four of her friends sign the fly leaf in the back of the book in March 1940 (shown right).
This nice First Edition (1-10,000) Third Reich photo book Wir Arbeitsmaiden is complete and in nice used condition. The original 80 year old dust jacket was laminated by a previous owner to preserve it. No odor.
