This is a beautiful original menu from Norddeutscher Lloyd Bremen, the huge German steamship line, featuring a Karl Diebitsch illustration of a bridge in the Alps above the words DEUTSCHLAND BAUT REICHSAUTOBAHN ALPENSTRASSE (Germany Builds State Motor Highways Alpine Thoroughfare).

The 11 x 15 inch (folds to 7-1/2 x 11 inches) lunch menu is from a West Indies Cruise of the Norddeutscher Lloyd S.S. Columbus and is dated Thursday 02 February 1939. It was a wonderful lunch including everything from braised sea bass, to squab and pork tenderloin, to cheese and chocolate ice cream.

The statement on the back cover of the menu in German and English is extremely historical. It says, “ALPINE HIGHWAY: Enterprises of all kinds, gigantic in conception and execution, with a spirit inseparable from those to whom their creation is due [Adolf Hitler], have resulted from Germany’s massed energies after overcoming the economic depression. As a part of the Reich Motor Highways [the Reichsautobahn] system the new Alpine Highway affords the motoring tourist many wonderful views of the picturesque landscapes of the pre-Alpine region which the road harmonizes so happily.”
