This is a very nice example of the rare 6-5/8 x 9-3/4 inch, 146 page, very heavily illustrated full-color hard cover book ARBEITSSCHLACHT - Fünf Jahr Malfahrten auf den Bauplätzen der Strassen Adolf Hitlers (Battle of Labor - Five Years of On-The-Scene Painting of The Highways of Adolf Hitler) by Ernst Vollbehr, as published by Zeitgeschichte Verlag Wilhelm Andermann in Berlin in 1938.

Ernst Vollbehr was a very well-known artist in Third Reich Germany, in fact he had been a well-known artist from the time of World War I, painting many pictures of German troops at the front. When Adolf Hitler began the construction of the Reichsautobahn in the fall of 1933, Vollbehr was there to paint pictures of the enormous engineering feat.

In addition to an extremely interesting text about the way the Autobahn was constructed, this book contains 40 of Vollbehr’s best paintings done during the period of construction. They include pictures done during the clearing of land and preparation of the road bed, building bridges, dredging and filling low land, quarrying stone, the excavation of prehistoric sights uncovered during the building, and even a picture of the construction in 1936-37 of the Zeppelin hangar near the freeway at Darmstadt.

This is one of the best books on the subject of the Nazi era Reichsautobahn, and the only book to contain Vollbehr’s full-color paintings.
