This was probably a pretty good watch when World War II Obergefreiter in Stabsbatterie II./ Artillerie Regiment 134, Anton Schmid, got it from his father. It is about 1-3/4 inches in diameter and has what appears to be a silver case that was once gold plated. Inside of the first back the name of Schmid's father Michael is engraved (but misspelled!). On the outside of the second back the words Cylindre 10 Rubis is engraved. Anton Schmid carried the watch throughout World War II.
We don't whether the watch works or does not work, and it really does not make any difference to us. We are offering the watch and chain in its original World War II case as a German artifact of World War 2, and not as a timepiece. If you can make it run, that's great!
For us the wonderful thing about this watch is the 50 mm hollow steel case with a clear dial into which the watch fits. The case was a standard, easily obtainable product that could be purchased by or for any Landser who took his watch to war.
Besides our excellent photographs of the watch and the Landser case for the watch, we have included a photograph of part of a page from the excellent illustrated book Deutsche Soldaten which shows a case identical to this one.
