This is an excellent example of the very rare heavily illustrated 1943 Yearbook for the Day of Sport for the German Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. By 1943, as a result of a process begun under Acting Reichsportector and SS General Reinhard Heydrich, the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia was quite fully integrated into the infrastructure of Greater Germany in anticipation of its eventual assimilation.
Nazi and Czech flags flew alongside each other to frame the symbol of the Protektorat - a huge eagle with a swastika on its breast and shields bearing the coats of arms of Böhmen und Mähren under each wing. Czech leaders in Nazi style uniforms wearing Nazi style visor caps oversaw the events of Youth Sports Day along with the Nazi military and political leaders in the Protectorate.
The best athletes in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia competed in the usual track and field events as well as events like log-tossing and pole-climbing. The book is full of beautiful Czech men and women competing and winning their events. At the back of the book there is a two-page list of the first, second and third place winners in all events.
The event took place in Prague (Praha, Prag) under the leadership of Dr. Frantisek Teuner in full view of tens of thousands of people. Massed flags were paraded before a huge crowd on Wenceslas Square in central Prague.
The Communist government that installed itself in Czechoslovakia after World War II saw to it that 99+% of the existing examples of this book were destroyed in order to forever remove the events of Den Mládeze 1943 from the minds of the citizens of the country.
The 71 year old, 8 x 10-¾ inch, 72 page book is one of the few that was hidden away and survived. It is very rare today. The book is complete and in very good used condition.
