Nazi soldier portrait studio in Paris (with German speaking personnel)
1941 paris art galleries

This is an exceptional 7 x 9-½ inch, 84 page heavily illustrated soft cover catalog for Kunst der Front (Art of the Front), an exhibition of German Luftwaffe soldier art held from 1 through 16 November 1941 at the Jeu de Paume Museum at Place de la Concorde and the corner of Rue de Rivoli in Nazi occupied Paris.

The Kunst der Front exhibition catalog consists of a list of all the soldier painters and sculptors whose work was being shown as well as a list of works exhibited (many are illustrated) as well as a large advertising section for Parisian companies interested in selling a wide variety of merchandise to German occupation troops.

Many of the advertisers were firms who specialized in high-end merchandise, expensive meals, antique furniture, rugs, soldier portrait photos, high-fashion clothing, girlie show type entertainment and galleries specializing in paintings by the masters of the 19th and 20th centuries, etc.
Place de la Concorde
We find it astonishing that recent movies such as the Monuments Men, which rather than telling the real story, would have viewers believe that when the Germans occupied France in 1940 they simply looted all the galleries and took the looted material back to Germany for Hitler and Göring. The indisputable fact is that in many cases collaborating people and French galleries were the perfectly willing sellers and German occupation troops were the willing buyers who made them rich. The problem with the actual history is that it is not the history Hollywood wishes to try to sell to the simpletons who buy tickets to their movie versions of history.
Oberst Mölders
This Kunst der Front exhibition catalog starts with a full-page photo portrait of Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring followed by a detailed alphabetic index of all the art on display at the exhibition. The catalog has black & white pictures of Generalfeldmarschall Sperrle, General Schmitt, Fort Eben-Emael, Oberst Mölders, the Singelgracht canal in Amsterdam, a bust of a young Parisienne, Monmartre, Flak artillery, the Rebuilding of Cambrai, Battle in the Balkans, the Alexander Church in Warsaw, Brussels, a Fisherman from Brittany with a Kriegsmarine Sailor, and many other pieces of art displayed at the exhibition.
