An exceptional gathering of young people occurred in north-central Germany in the summer of 1935 when German Youth from many countries around the world came to Deutschlandlager to celebrate the resurgence of Germany with the Hitler Youth. From the Americas and England, from Africa to Finland and even from Palestine and Guatamala, young people of German extraction gathered north of Berlin to experience the new Germany.
By ship, train, airplane and bus thousands for foreign Hitler Youth members responded to the cal of the homeland under the flags of 51 nations at the Deutschlandlager. They sang, they worked, made radio broadcasts, participated in sports and were joined by high-ranking foreign-born Nazis like Deputy Führer Rudolf Hess.
Some of the Auslanddeutsche Hitlerjugend boys visited Berlin and Potsdam, witnessed maneuvers of the Luftwaffe and Army, and traveled the country on the world’s first freeway system, the Reichsautobahn.
They visited the Hochlandlager, the Feldherrnhalle in Munich, Hitler’s cell in Landsberg Prison and saw the Zeppelin factory in Friedrichshafen.
Their extraordinary trip was recorded from start to finish in photographs by Heinrich Hoffmann Junior and melded with a fine text by Siegfried Zoglmann in this excellent, rare 7 x 9-1/2 inch, 100 page very heavily illustrated hard cover book called Jugend erlebt Deutschland (Youth Experiences Germany) as published in 1936 by Verlag für Soziale Ethik und Kunstpflege in Berlin.
They heard speeches from Nazi Frankenführer Julius Streicher in Nürnberg, from Reichsminister Frick, Dr. Goebbels, from Jugendführer Baldur von Schirach (whose mother was American) and even from Adolf Hitler himself.
