Runes are a form of alphabet developed in northern Europe which represent the old Norse language common to Scandinavian people until about 700 AD. While their precise origins are unclear, it is thought that the evolution of the German rune alphabet dates to about 200 AD. The word rune comes from the more ancient word “Raunen” which experts believe originally meant “to carve”. Runic symbols played an important role in the Third Reich and were the subject of many books and scholarly studies.

This chart was sometimes found as an insert in the rare 1937 SS-Nordland Verlag book Runenkunde by Heinar Schilling, but is almost never available by itself. Both sides of the 6 x 8-½ inch 4-panel chart are printed in a woodgrain pattern and the runes are printed in dark brown.

Folded once vertically through the center to fit in the Schilling book. Condition exactly as shown, 100% original to the Third Reich.
