The two rare original Third Reich technical publications offered for sale on this USMBOOKS web page were issued by the office of Dr. Fritz Todt, the Generalinspektor für das deutsche Straßenwesen (Inspector General for German Roadways) in 1936 and 1937. The goal of the guidelines in these books was to have a uniform framework for all state highways in Adolf Hitler's Germany and they are an amazing source of information about the technical aspects, design and planning of Landstrassen or Highways in Nazi Germany.
Vorläufige Richtlinien für den
Ausbau der Landstraßen 1937
(Provisional Guidelines for the
Extension of State Highways) |
This rare 1937 publication (shown right) measures 8-½ x 12 inches and has about 30 pages of text covering on and off-ramps, guard rails, street corners, sidewalks, signage, bicycle paths, car and truck measurements, and much more.
A flap inside the back cover contains 15 illustrated tables with design drawings and specifications for stone road markers, road widths, how far to plant trees and shrubs away from new roads, visibility on curved highways and corners, concrete posts and guard rails, driving speeds on mountain roads, etc., etc. |
The purpose of state highways is stated clearly in the Foreword of the second book. It is part of a conversation Adolf Hitler had in the summer of 1935 during which he said, "Political Unity between German States was made possible by Railroads. Roads are necessary for Unity between the German People."
These two rare technical books contain enormous fold-outs, technical drawings, design cross sections, road layouts, color maps, sample cost calculation forms, all detailed information necessary to design and build uniform State Highways throughout Nazi Germany. The previous owner (probably a road engineering or highway department in Munich) added many written and typed notes, additions and revisions.
Vorläufige Richtlinien für einheitliche Entwurfsgestaltung im Landstraßenbau 1936
(Provisional Guidelines for Uniform Design and Layout of State Highway Construction) |
The rare 1936 publication (shown at the top of this USMBOOKS web page) measures 8-½ x 12 inches and has about 30 pages of text and three gigantic fold-out technical drawings in the back for a planned reconstruction and expansion of Reichsstrasse 1, the highway between Berlin and Frankfurt on the Oder River, east of the Reichshauptstadt. |
Most people with an interest in Third Reich history are aware of the Reichautobahn or freeway system developed in Nazi Germany. These two very detailed publications show that just as much emphasis was placed on the development of smaller roads that connected to the Reichsautobahn in Nazi Germany and occupied territories. They are a rare insight in the planning of the future of a larger, more modern Grossdeutschland!
These two Nazi publications are nearly 80 year old! They are in nice used condition with handwritten revisions and typed and handwritten additions by the previous German owner. We purchased these books together with other Reichautobahn material from an author who was working on a manuscript about the Reichautobahn and other highways in Hitler's Germany. Many of the illustrations are simply not available anywhere else and without these books would be lost to history.
This lot of 2 rare Nazi highway design and construction technical specifications
