Nova Technik GmbH was (and is) an independent German manufacturer and a trading company of technical equipment. During the Third Reich the company manufactured black-out lights and accessories used by nearly every Wehrmacht vehicle, under the brand name Notek (short for Nova Technik or New Technology). The company was located in Munich and this is the operating and installation instruction book for black-out lights on vehicles, for driving at night in columns.
|
Above, Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler; Waffen-SS General Sepp Dietrich and other SS personnel gather for a technical explanation of the function of a Notek Tarnscheinwerfer or blackout headlamp on a Wehrmacht Sturmgeschutz armored vehicle in 1941. Rather than illuminating the sides of the roadway, the light beam from this unit focussed only on the roadway for a distance of about 30 yards ahead of the vehicle and was thus much less likely to be noticed by the enemy.

Black-out lights were essential on military vehicles in modern armies during World War II and were even used on civilian cars adapted for military use. They are a common but little understood feature of vehicles seen in newsreels and photographs of the period.

This very rare instruction manual explains in great detail how to properly install and use (and NOT use) these lights, the positions for different distances and circumstances (driving with or without a trailer, for example), and where to acquire replacement parts all over Nazi Germany.
The World War II era Third Reich manual is genuine to the period, complete, in nice used condition and very rare. It has nothing missing, no writing and no offensive odor. |

The 5-¾ x 8-¼ inch, illustrated 16-page original German book consists of three in-depth parts covering the (1) Tarnscheinwerfer (black-out headlight), (2) the Abstands-Rücklicht (black-out tail light) and (3) the Stufenschalter (foot switch). It also contains practical tips for users, such as “if possible test at night to observe the full features of the equipment.”
