THE ILLUSTRATED NAZI
BIOGRAPHY OF ITALO BALBO, ITALIAN AVIATOR, POLITICIAN AND COLONIALIST |

This is a nice example of the rare 6-1/4 x 9 inch, 224 page heavily illustrated hard cover biography ,,ITALO BALBO - DER MENSCH, DER POLITIKER, DER FLIEGER, DER KOLONISATOR’’ (Italo Balbo, the Man, the Politician, the Aviator, the Colonizer) by Rolf Italiaander as published by Verlag Knorr & Hirth in München (Munich), Germany in 1942. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Perhaps the favorite Italian of both Nazi Führer Adolf Hitler and the Head of German Aviation, Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring, Balbo was a World War I veteran of Italian Mountain Troops, an early Fascist and by the time of the March on Rome in October 1922, a prominant Fascist leader. In 1923 he was charged with the murder of an anti-Fascist Catholic priest in Argenta.
In 1926 he was appointed Secretary of State for Aviation and in August 1928 he became General of the Air Force. A year later he became the Minister of Aviation. A highlight of his career was a trip from Rome to Chicago with a flight of 24 Italian flying boats that ended in Lake Michigan. |

In honor of the feat, Mussolini donated a column from Ostia to the city of Chicago which still stands along Lakefront Trail, south of Soldier Field. The city of Chicago renamed 7th Street “Balbo Drive” and staged a parade in his honor.
It has been said since World War II that during the German-Russian invasion of Poland in 1939, Balbo argued that Mussolini should side with Britain rather than Hitler. On 28 June 1940, Air Marshal Italo Balbo was killed while on a reconnaissance flight over Italian positions at Tobruk, Libya. |

As the book says, Italo Balbo (1896 - 1940) “was always curious, always active, always happy, always elegant....”.
The original dust jacket of this 1942 biography ,,ITALO BALBO - DER MENSCH, DER POLITIKER, DER FLIEGER, DER KOLONISATOR’’ is damaged but it has been laminated to preserve what is left of it. Other than minor water stains to the bottom of the covers and a few pages, this book is in very good condition. |
