This rare 88 year old Nazi photo book is complete and in very nice, little used condition and has no odor. Fine examples like this one don’t come along often!

Also pictured are funerals and graves of Nazi martyrs killed by Communists, Hitler celebrating on the day he received German citizenship, Hitler and Ernst Röhm during an SA review, the Adolf Hitler Haus in Berlin, marching SA men, the early Nazi Movement in Munich, early Nazi newspapers and propaganda posters, Nazi charity collections, Hitler Youth gatherings, the 1927 Nazi Party Day in Nuremberg, SA musicians, etc.

The main section of Das erwachende Berlin contains images showing the changing political situation and the rise of the Nazi Party, and their efforts in resolving the dire situation in Germany - Deutschland Erwacht! There are many pictures of well-known National Socialists (frequently in civilian clothes) such as Hermann Göring, Dr. Ley, Ernst Röhm, Alfred Rosenberg, Dr. Franz Gürtner, Prinz August Wilhelm (“Auwi”), and Hitler addressing crowds at the Berlin Sportpalast. Dr. Joseph Goebbels is pictured giving speeches during election time, “fighting the political big-wigs with words”.

It is a fine 9-¾ x 12-¾ inch example, with 184 page printed on glossy high-quality paper and has green linen hard covers. The embossed gold blocking on the front cover is not flaked off like so many examples of Das erwachende Berlin we have seen and sold.

In later editions of this book pictures of SA Stabschef Ernst Röhm and his deputy SA-Obergruppenführer Edmund Heines were removed.

The pre-Nazi section of the book shows famous buildings in Berlin, regular citizens during daily life, risqué entertainment in nightclubs, Jewish influence in the police and art, poverty and unemployment, inflation, political street battles, strikes and demonstrations, Rosa Luxemburg, Karl Liebknecht, Ernst Thälmann, KPD politicians and Jewish police officials in Berlin, wealthy and influential German Jews, as well as established German politicians such as Weiss, Scheidemann, Ebert, Rathenau, Stresemann and others.

This is a very nice First Edition of the rare hardcover Third Reich book Das erwachende Berlin (The Awakening of Berlin) by Reichsminister für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda and Gauleiter of Berlin, Dr. Joseph Goebbels.

The high quality book from 1934 is dedicated to SA Sturmführer Horst Wessel and has excellent historical photos of the “anything goes” city of Berlin in the early 1930s, during the important elections and after the National Socialists were elected to power.

The final section of Das erwachende Berlin has pictures of the new Nazi cabinet, the Reichstag fire, the Day of Potsdam, 21 March 1933, the reopening of Parliament. The last photo shows Adolf Hitler shaking hands with German President Paul von Hindenburg.

There are pictures of Goebbels and fellow journalists organizing Nazi Party press efforts, the office of the NSDAP Gau Berlin newspaper Der Angriff, volunteers folding propaganda hand-outs, ladies manufacturing Nazi swastika flags, Sepp Dietrich (in civilian clothes) with Hitler in front of an airplane used for campaigning, the famous Deutschland-Flug, and Nazi politicians Dr. Frick, Hans Schemm, Alfred Rosenberg, Hermann Goering and others after their election success.

This First Edition of Das erwachende Berlin was published by Franz Eher Verlag Nachfolger, the Central Publishing House of the Nazi Party in München in 1934.
