OMGUS is the abbreviation for Office of Military Government for Germany US, and that organization published this 6-3/8 x 9 inch, 24-page softcover publication called OMGUS Facts you want to know. The purpose of Facts you want to know was to familiarize arriving American military occupation personnel with the organization and functions of OMGUS, and the services they provided such as occupation quartering, messing, transportation, recreation, entertainment and publications.

This is the February 1946 revised edition printed in Berlin containing additions and revisions to the previous edition. It is in unread condition complete with all fold-out maps and the rare The Berliner sheet (shown right) with instructions for military personnel traveling by train to Berlin, and a finely detailed ¾ inch tall golden cloisonné emblem of the US Army Transportation Corps.

This comprehensive 76 year old US Military Government publication for US personnel in immediate postwar Berlin is in remarkably good shape. It looks like the booklet was never opened by the original owner. The maps are crisp and the color cover is still as bright as the day it was printed. It has no offensive odor.

The contents of Facts you want to know is interesting and practical. Details and information about billeting, entertainment, sport, education, transportation, medical and religious services for male and female personnel. There are also warnings about black market activities, of course.

The modernist Weimar Republic era housing development Onkel Toms Hütte (Uncle Tom’s Cabin) contained the Enlisted Men PX, barber and beauty shops, the motor pool office, a photo and gift shop. All are listed with addresses, opening hours and telephone numbers, as are many other military offices, along with excellent maps showing how to get there.
