TECHNIQUES OF DEMOCRATIC ACTION, A Handbook for Reorientation is a rare original that was published by the Office of Military Government for Bavaria (OMGB). It is a 9 x 11-¾ inch softcover folio with 26 typed pages (52 pages in all but printed on only one side of the paper) that in clear language spell out the basic American occupation policy of Germany and specifically Bavaria:
1) That Germany be made physically incapable of waging aggressive war, and
2) That Germany be made mentally and morally fit for membership in the society of nations through education in democracy.
There are chapters covering what has been accomplished in the US Zone regarding re-establishment of democratic principles and institutions since the fall of the Nazi regime in 1945, while also pointing out that “democracy cannot be imposed on a people any more than it can be given.”
Freedom, equality, the rule of law, opportunity, government for the people, individual responsibility, freedom of speech, of press and public expression are some of the subjects covered.
This 100% original example of TECHNIQUES OF DEMOCRATIC ACTION, A Handbook for Reorientation is undated but probably printed in 1947. It is in excellent condition and has no offensive odor.
This is very rare immediate post-World War II English language information that gives insight in the difficult task of the de-Nazification of Germany. This publication is perfect for anyone researching the subject, or any library touching on any aspect of immediate postwar Germany.
The last chapter is entitled “The Democratic Example” and covers the very nature of America’s mission in Germany, and that everybody involved is shouldered with a great deal of responsibility in the fulfillment in the occupation aim, especially the Military Government Officer in the field.
The original owner wrote his name on the front cover in blue ink. He was a US Army Captain who worked in 1948 as chief of the Social Insurance and Housing Branch, US Army Manpower Division, Bavarian Sector; and from 1950-1952 as chief of Real Estate and Land Resources, Bavarian Sector of the American Military Government in Nürnberg, Germany.
This rare OMGB publication about establishing democracy in postwar
