RARE, HEAVILY ILLUSTRATED NAZI BOOK ~ A NEW WAY TO THE NATIONAL SOCIALIST COMMUNITY PUBLISHED IN 1939 BY THE NAZI TEACHER’S LEAGUE

This is a superb First Edition of the rare heavily illustrated hardcover Nazi book called Erziehung zur Volksgemeinschaft: Ein neuer Weg published by the Reichsverwaltung des N.S. Lehrerbundes (State Administration of the NSLB or National Socialist Teachers League of Nazi Party) in 1939. The title translates as “Education towards the National [Socialist] Community: A New Way” and the big book contains a great many very graphic educational examples that depict a very cohesive National Socialist nation.

The foreword by Reichswalter des NSLB Gauleiter Fritz Wächtler (shown left) states that one day the German youth will have to take over the Reich and that a proper [National Socialist] education in German schools should prepare them for that day. Wächtler expressed this sentiment at the opening of the 1939 exhibition Hilft Mit! Volksgemeinschaft - Schicksalsgemeinschaft.

Hilf Mit! translates as “assist” or “lend a hand” and was the name of the Illustrated German Student magazine published by the NSLB. The exhibition highlighted the importance of education centered upon creating the National Socialist society and its destiny. Not just education for the individual, but education to create a united community of likeminded Germans, and specifically pure-blooded Germans (Blutgemeinschaft) sharing a common destiny.

The big 320-page hardcover book starts with a full-page sepia tone portrait of SS-Obergruppenführer and Gauleiter der Bayerischen Ostmark Fritz Wächtler.
Erziehung zur Volksgemeinschaft: Ein neuer Weg is profusely illustrated with glossy plates in sepia-tone and color showing many, many examples of different forms of art, drawings, paintings, posters, maps, songs, poems and folk art created by German children of various ages from different parts of Greater Germany which at that time this book was produced included Austria, Sudetenland and Memelland. All portray the Nazi ideal and goal of unity.

There is patriotic and nationalistic artwork (The Führer Orders - We Follow!, shown left), scenes celebrating military, industrial and agricultural life, metal and glass objects adorned with swastikas, wood carvings, children’s health posters, art celebrating the German mother and family, examples of typical German houses and farms, WHW charity advertising, art showing German colonies in Africa, illustrations to show the importance of recycling as part of the Nazi economic Four Year Plan, illustrations showing the German Wehrmacht, economic output, and even a model of the Hermann-Göring-Werke!

There are photographs of Nazi officials such as Gauleiter Fritz Wächtler, Reichspressechef Dr. Otto Dietrich, and Dr. Fritsch visiting various NSLB exhibitions featuring the artwork by German students which was also viewed by “millions of students and many thousands of educators and parents.”

The content of Erziehung zur Volksgemeinschaft: Ein neuer Weg was assembled by Oberstudiendirektor Walther Wallowitz. It was published by Verlag H.A. Braun & Co. of Berlin-Tempelhof and the 7-¾ x 9-½ inch, 320-page hardcover book was printed by F.A. Brockhaus of Leipzig.

Leaders of the Nazi Party in Austria and Sudetenland, Reichsminister Dr. Arthur Seys-Inquart and Gauleiter Konrad Henlein, contributed chapters about the importance of a cohesive National Socialist nation, and their part in it since their reunification with Hitler’s Germany.

The original dark red leather spine has the title in gold lettering. The rare 85 year old Nazi book is in very fine condition and has no odor.

Shown right is the dedication on the front flyleaf, dated 5 May 1940. It shows this example of Erziehung zur Volksgemeinschaft: Ein neuer Weg was given by a NSLB District Leader from Altenburg (25 miles south of the East German city of Leipzig) to teacher Alfred Schneider, in gratitude for his many years of faithful cooperation.
