TWO ORIGINAL 1939 ILLUSTRATED NAZI MAGAZINES ‘THE GERMAN EDUCATOR’

This is a lot of TWO 1939 Nazi magazines called Der deutsche Erzieher (The German Educator) published by the NS-Lehrerbund (NSLB or National Socialist Teachers League). In the masthead the publication is called the Reichszeitung des Nationalsozialistichen Lehrerbundes or the “National Publication of the National Socialist Teachers League”.

They are issues 11 (1 June) and 12 (15 June) from the year 1939, and they are editions published for NSDAP Gau Oberdonau by the Verlagspostamt Linz. Both 8-7/8 x 12 inch heavily illustrated magazines have striking covers featuring the Nazi Hoheitszeichen, and the eagle has nearly a 5 inch wingspan.

The summer kick-off of the NSLB school hostel ship “Hans Schemm” on 11 May 1939 is the first feature. The official ceremony was attended by Gauleiter and NSLB Reichswalter Fritz Wächtler (shown left) and the ship was headed to the Sudetengau for the first time since it was launched in 1937.

Published a few months before the German invasion of Poland, it is interesting that there are in-depth articles that cover the historic city of Danzig, the Corridor, and Poland. These articles are accompanied by maps and pictures of Danzig, the Marienburg, Danzig Gauleiter Albert Forster, and Fritz Wächtler’s visit to Danzig where he met with local NSLB educators.

Other articles cover school and student statistics from 1933-1938 in all European countries, the life of Richard Strauss, Art and Race, improving school facilities in rural areas, the importance of the family table, incorporating “Nordic Beliefs” into education, the healing power of nature, Jewish influence through the ages, the student garden at the Reichsgartenschau Stuttgart, the World Order 20 years after the Treaty of Versailles, changes in the tax system relating to teachers, recycling metals as part of the economic Four Year Plan, as well as event announcements in NSDAP Gau Oberdonau.

Both issues of Der deutsche Erzieher come with original multi-page inserts. They have information for Nazi school teachers about special health insurance options, the economy, and legal matters. There is even an original unused Deutsche Beamten-Krankenversicherung advertising postcard that was never sent in to request additional information about health insurance for civil servants.

Both issues also have a crossword puzzle, an ongoing checkers game, want ads for teachers, and advertising by Dr. Oetker, Maggi, Efasit, Hohner accordions, Leica cameras, office furniture, watches, moving companies, etc. There are also ads by health resorts and tourist attractions.

These two issues of Der deutsche Erzieher have 102 regular illustrated pages plus the above mentioned inserts. Heft 12 has the name of a previous owner written in pencil on the front cover. We did not find any other writing and the rare Third Reich magazine are complete and have no odor.
