The city of Lahr is in the Black Forest in far south-western Germany. On this USMBOOKS web page we offer for sale a 128-page softcover historical almanac-type calendar for the year 1939 produced and printed in Lahr by Der Lahrer Hinkende Bote (The Limping Messenger of Lahr). It is similar to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.
The next 60 pages are filled with chapters covering French colonial politics, the imminent changes of relations between Austria and Hitler’s Germany, KdF trips to Italy for German laborers, the death of General Ludendorff, Tyrolean hero / martyr Andreas Hofer, and even the diet of Olympic athletes.
The chapter called “The Limping Communist Standing” is a scathing text about Bolshevism, its lies and abuses of the population and is extremely anti-Jewish in tone. It is accompanied by several anti-Semitic cartoons and Nazi caricatures.
Many pages have quotes from Adolf Hitler speeches, and there are several patriotic poems and songs.
The NSV (Nationalsozialistische Volkswohlfahrt or National Socialist People's Welfare organization) is the largest advertiser in this 85 year old Nazi Volkskalender. Other advertising is by Miele, Dr. Oetker, Deutsche Reichsbahn, Erdal, Zeiss-Ikon, Hohner harmonicas, Torpedo bicycles, Westfalia pots and pans, as well as many companies producing or selling shotguns, hair growth potions, dance lessons, weight loss methods, diabetes pills, etc.
This rare 85 year old example of Des Lahrer hinkenden Boten neuer historischer Kalender für den Bürger und Landmann auf das Jahr 1939 had a print run 234,000. Few survive! It is complete, without any writing and in in very nice, little-used condition for its age. No odor.

The first section in the 6-5/8 x 8-7/8 inch book is the calendar portion. It is beautifully illustrated and has no written entries or notes. Sun- and moon eclipses are next, followed by comet appearances and moon phases in 1939.
The next few pages have information about the United States. There is a list of national holidays, postal rules and regulations to and from the USA, German and Swiss consulates in the USA and American consulates in Nazi Germany and Switzerland.
