Schmiedbauer's photo captions and text praise Hitler and the National Socialists for the wonderful things they have done for Salzburg after the Anschluss or reunification of Austria with Nazi Germany, and explain the Nazi uses for many ancient and historical structures in and around Salzburg. The restoration of many historic buildings that were used again by Nazi Reichstatthalters, Gauleiters and Adolf Hitler, as well as new houses for the citizens of Salzburg and the construction of the Reichsautobahn linking the city directly to Hitler's Nazi Germany.

The splendid baroque palace on the outskirts of Salzburg was host to dignitaries such as Benito Mussolini, Count Ciano, Hungarian Admiral Horthy, Slovakian President Tiso, Rumanian Marshal Ion Antonescu, Norwegian Prime Minister Vidkun Quisling, Vichy French Prime Minister Pierre Laval and other important visitors to the nearby Berghof at Berchtesgaden. In July 1944, after his untimely death, famous Gebirgsjäger General Eduard Dietl was honored by Adolf Hitler at Schloss Kleßheim and the palace was the site of many military presentations as well. Salzburg Gestalt und Antlitz also contains a photo of beautiful castle Fuschl am See that was owned by Nazi Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop's since 1938.
Schmiedbauer explains that this book was not meant the be a guidebook to Salzburg, but rather the possibility for readers to get a feel for the city, its history, atmosphere, architecture and art. Photos show views of and from the castle, the city's famous churches, the Kapuzinerberg, the Getreidegasse and Judengasse, the house where Mozart was born, Schloss Mirabell, Schloss Leopoldskron (film location for the movie The Sound of Music), Schloss Hellbrunn, etc.
An example of something that makes this book invaluable for people with an interest in the Third Reich are the exterior and interior photos of Klessheim, das Gästehaus des Führers. Between 1938 and 1945 it was referred to as the Empfangssalon des Reiches or the Reception Room of the Reich and the photos show the changes made by order of the Führer.
Salzburg Gestalt und Antlitz (The Form and Face of Salzburg) is an 8-1/2 x 11 inch hardcover photo book with 272 heavily illustrated pages by well-known illustrator, photographer and painter Alois Schmiedbauer with a foreword about the history of beautiful Salzburg by Karl Fuchs.
A similar but de-Nazified example of Salzburg Gestalt und Antlitz was published again after World War II in 1950, 1971 and 1982 and interestingly, in the online bio of Schmiedbauer, this 1943 edition is never mentioned! Rare today with the Nazi content.
Published in 1943 by Salzburger Druckerei und Verlag GmbH, this book comes with its original dust jacket which was laminated by a previous owner to preserve it. Some of the pages were damp at one time and are somewhat wavy, but the book has NO odor.
This 1943 edition of Salzburg Gestalt und Antlitz is **SOLD**.
