Recently purchased in Germany, this is an excellent, barely used example of the scarce Raumbild-Verlag Otto Schönstein book Die Olympischen Spiele 1936 Band I with photographs by Heinrich Hoffmann, Reichsbilderberichterstatter der NSDAP and text by former boxer Ludwig Haymann.
Raumbild Verlag (Three Dimensional Picture Publishers) books were unique in that they contained photographic stereo-view cards and a fold-up metal optical device with which the cards could be viewed. If you are not familiar with this Nazi three-dimensional book, you need to know that it consists of a well-written text by former boxer Ludwig Haymann on the subject of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. There are 3D photos interspersed on black pages throughout the text, and the text is written in its entirety in the German language.
The special covers of this album are about 1/2-inch thick and are die-cut with cavities that hold the 100 special 3-D stereo photographs (real photographs - NOT halftone prints) and the metal viewer with glass lenses that is set up to view the photographs. The 100 stereo photos each measure 2-3/8 x 5 inches and have a full description of the subject printed on the back in German. When seen in the viewer each picture is incredibly three-dimensional, almost as if the scene was being viewed in real life.
The photos show the opening ceremonies, Olympic flags and bells, the Reichssportführer Hans von Tschammer und Osten, the Olympic Stadium, the Dietrich Eckart Stage on the Olympic Grounds in Berlin, the Olympic Village, notable dignitaries, winter and summer sports venues, Adolf Hitler, spectators, Hitler Youth boys in Ehrendienst uniforms, the Olympic torch, athletes of all sorts in competition, Olympic medals, television equipment broadcasting the Olympic Games, the filming of the Olympics, Leni Riefenstahl, members of the press, autograph seekers, and even the German railways in service of the Olympic Games.
This book is complete and in excellent original condition with the original metal viewer. If you are really looking for a fine example, THIS IS THE ONE - the best one we have ever seen!
