At the time of his Heldentod Keller was an Unteroffizier in a Gebirgs-Pionier-Battalion and the recipient of the Nazi Iron Cross 2nd Class, the East Front Medal (Ostmedaille), the Engineer Assault Badge (Pionier-Sturmabzeichen) and a bronze Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen).

Far away in his homeland, twenty-two year old Keller left behind a mother and first cousin who were saddened by the fact his resting place was on foreign soil. His two-sided 65 x 113 mm (about 2-1/2 x 4-3/8 inch) remembrance card was printed in Penzberg in Bavaria, a small town a stone’s throw west of Bad Tölz, home of the SS-Junkerschule. It has a religious image and prayer on the back side.

The 90 x 137 mm (3-½ x 5-½ inch) portrait of Erich Keller was produced from a negative and shows him wearing his uniform, Bergmütze and medals. The image used for the Sterbebild was made using the formal portrait.

According to the card, Erich Keller was born on 29 September 1920 and died a hero's death on 2 November 1942 in the Kaukasus, the Caucasus mountain range between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.
