Spargut ist Volksgut, Schriften an der Sparer

This is a very unusual piece of Third Reich ephemera called Spargut ist Volksgut (Saving Money is Good for the Nation), urging citizens of Nazi Germany to save money. It is the first issue of a series called Schriften an der Sparer or “Booklets for Savers”, and we have never seen another one. It is undated but from the text it clearly dates to the early days of the National Socialist government in Germany (“a German spring has moved into the country”).

The 5-¾ x 8-¼ inch, 8-page Schrift has a German savings bank from the 16th century on the cover. President of the Reichsbank [Nazi Finance Minister] Dr. Hjalmar Schacht highlights “saving for national economic advancement” and in other parts of this rare Nazi publication saving money is called a service to the nation and a conservative virtue. Having a savings account and building it up will improve a person’s self-worth, while building assets and capital is linked to labor creation, battling unemployment and faith in the future of Nazi Germany.

It is interesting that after the crippling inflation during the Weimar Republic years, the text also touches on the fact that saving money is safe. The National Socialist government is making sure carefully saved money is protected by supporting the value of the Reichsmark. “The strong leadership of Volkskanzler Adolf Hitler ensures a secure future.” Readers are urged to open a savings account at a bank, and not keep money in a mattress at home!

This rare approximately 90 year old example of Spargut ist Volksgut, is complete and in very nice, little used condition. No writing, no odor.
