AN AUTHENTIC WOVEN CAP TALLY FROM THE
HAMBURG AMERIKA LINE SHIP ,,HANSA |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This is an absolutely original, beautifully woven cap tally or ribbon of the sort worn on the Donald Duck style caps of sailors in the Kriegsmarine or German Navy. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The military tallys usually had only the name of a school or ship woven in gold thread on the black ribbon. Those for commercial sailors on ocean liners usually had the ships name in the center and the flags of the company or the country on the sides.
This cap tally is from the cap of a crew member of the Hamburg-America Line ship ,,Hansa" which sailed out of Hamburg between 1935 and 1945. It was sunk by the British Royal Air Force near Warnemünde on 6 March 1945. The black silk-like ribbon is 1-1/4 inches wide x 12-1/2 inches long and is in perfect condition. |
