Feldzug im Osten or Campaign in the East, Gefreiter Heinz Postenrieder
Feldzug im Osten or Campaign in the East is a bilingual book (in English and German) compiled from text and photos by Heinz Postenrieder, a trained photographer with a camera who was a Gefreiter in the German Army during Operation Barbarossa. It is a book compiled by Chris Miller, Postenrieder’s daughter who with the help of her German half-brother deciphered their father’s handwritten war diary entries and impressive photo album.

The diary entries were written between 2 August 1941 and 19 April 1942 and are in the book in their original German language version but also translated into English. The writings describe the difficult circumstances Wehrmacht soldiers faced during their invasion of the Soviet Union. The enormous distances to be covered in harsh weather, illness, daily life, the death of fellow soldiers, poor-to-no food and supplies, interaction with the Russian population, etc.

Postenrieder drew maps in his war diary which are also reproduced in this 6 x 9 inch, 290-page flexible cover book with many black & white and a good number of full-color.

Along with the two war-time note books used to assemble the text of Feldzug im Osten, photos from Postenrieder’s wartime photo album are also heavily used. They show a Nazi field kitchen, muddy battlefields and villages, fellow soldiers in winter camouflage, home-made winter boots, Christmas with fellow soldiers, German soldier graves in the snow, Wehrmacht cavalry troops, a Fieseler Storch in the snow, dead Partisans in the snow, Postenrieder on a communication pole, washing his clothes, flanked by two Russian women, writing letters, as well as healthy and poor Russian children, the inside of a simple Russian house, Russian churches, etc., etc.

Postenrieder survived the war and his time as a Russian POW and when he returned to Germany, became an optician in the city of Pforzheim. He died there in April 1979 at the age of 70.
