On the left side, the Lehrbrief or certificate of apprenticeship states that Karl Heinz Röde finished his three-year apprenticeship (10 April 1938 through 10 April 1941) and that his teacher (a Master Blacksmith named Schmiedemeister Ernst Rüsowski) thought he had been an adequate student. The certificate was signed 12 May 1941 in Mettmann (a town east of Düsseldorf and west of Wuppertal).

On the right side, the Prüfungszeugnis or test certificate issued by the Handwerkskammer (the department of the German National Chamber of Commerce for professions to do with manual crafts) of Mettmann on 12 May 1941 is proof that Karl Heinz Röde finished his trade examination in a satisfactory way as well.
