The stein is of a type that was considerably more expensive than the stoneware steins that are much more commonly seen. On the right side of the stein, the glass is engraved with -0.4 l which signifies the capacity of the glass as 4/10 of one liter. There are 17 rectangular shapes cut into the outside surface of the glass at the center of the mug.
The hinged lid is attached in the standard fashion to the glass handle of the beer mug. The stamped German silver lid is soldered to the pewter nob hinged to the handle. That German silver lid is engraved with the dedication to Uffz. Grössel, the date, etc. Attached in the center of the German silver lid is a beautifully die-struck oak leaf wreath with a M36 Nazi helmet on top of it. The beautifully detailed helmet has two long, threaded screws attached inside which secure the helmet and the wreath to the lid with small nuts on the inside.
There are no chips or cracks on the outside of this mug but the inside of the lip is chipped from using a metal or glass implement to stir the contents of the mug. Most often this result occurs when the mug is used for Christmas and New Years concoctions like Glühwein, eggnog, etc.
This is a particularly beautiful example of a ver rare type of Nazi drinking mug, and except for the chips inside the lid it is in splendid original condition. The metal parts have an even, heavy patina and it appears they haven't been polished since the end of World War II.
Nice used condition.
