Nazi Gebirgsjäger Officer’s Field Tunic

General der Gebirgstruppe Rudolf Konrad
This is a very nice original Nazi Gebirgsjäger Officer's Field Tunic made of fine worsted wool, complete with its original Third Reich sleeve, breast, collar and shoulder insignia. It is perfectly typical of the shorter style tailored Gebirgsjaeger uniform tunics favored by many officers - with slanted pockets on the bottom below the belt, rather than heavy patch pockets found on standard Wehrmacht issue tunics.
One of our accompanying photo left shows Nazi Gebirgsjäger Generalmajor Konrad wearing a virtually identical tunic in the field during the Poland campaign in 1939. Many Gebirgsjäger units were raised in alpine German cities like Berchtesgaden, Innsbruck, Bad Reichenhall, Garmisch, etc. and this had long been the traditional style of tunic for mountain troop officers in those areas.

The tunic is fully lined in high-quality grey cotton cloth with coat hanger loops in each shoulder. The sleeves are lined in the customary fashion with striped cotton sateen. There are no internal pockets.

The outer shell is made of beautiful grey-green wool with a soft nap. Pointed pocket flaps on the upper patch pockets, and the lower slant pockets button with standard 20 mm pebbled field grey Wehrmacht buttons, just like the eight buttons on the front fly.

The original dark green collar is held shut with a single brass hook and eye and has two high-quality heavily embroidered collar tabs.

Both original Hauptmann shoulder boards are held in place near the collar with 16 mm threaded FFL studs.
The breast eagle backing cloth matches the collar perfectly and is nicely worked in bullion thread embroidery. It was sewed to the front of the tunic prior to installation of the lining.

The fully machine embroidered BEVO Edelweiss arm patch is machine sewed to the right arm and has been there since the jacket was new as evidenced by old folds in the lining material.
MEASUREMENTS: across the shoulders the tunic measures 17 inches, sleeve length is 23 inches and the length of the back is 25 inches. The collar measures 17 inches. The chest measures 18-1/2 inches (37 inch chest) at the armpits and the waist measurement is 17 inches (34 inch waist).
There are no moth holes in this Third Reich Mountain Troop tunic that we can find but there are a few spots where the nap on the wool is either mothed or worn through to the woven substrate. One such area is just above and to the rear of the button on the flap of the lower right pocket and another small spot is just above the top right pocket flap below the tip of the eagle's wing. There are other small spots here and there but these in no way materially detract from the appearance of the jacket.
This is a very nice example of a well-tailored, nice sized uniform tunic for an Officer of Nazi Mountain Troops during the Third Reich in Adolf Hitler's Germany. it would display well on a mannequin or hung on a hanger. We purchased the tunic privately and doubt it has ever been to a militaria show anywhere. Very nice used condition just as described and shown in our excellent photographs.
