Over the years the Hotel Berchtesgadener Hof in Berchtesgaden provided first class shelter for the well-to-do from royalty, to top Nazis and American Generals. It began life as the Grand Hotel in 1898 and because of its superb location was popular for decades with the wealthy.
In 1939 the NSDAP purchased the Grand Hotel in Berchtesgaden and the Hotel Deutscher Hof in Nürnberg and established a corporation, the Hotelbetriebsgesellschaft (Gotthard Färber, General Manager) to operate them. The name of the Grand Hotel was changed to the Berchtesgadener Hof and it underwent extensive and expensive renovations to prepare it for use by high Nazi Party officials and diplomatic guests.
Hitler attended the grand re-opening of the Berchtesgadener Hof in 1941 with Reichsleiter Martin Borman and Party Treasurer F.X. Schwarz. The list of guests who stayed at the Berchtesgadner Hof includes Eva Braun, Hermann Fegelein, Erwin Rommel, Joachim von Ribbentrop, Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, Neville Chamberlain, Dr. Josef Goebbels, Admiral Raeder, etc.
The American Army used the Hotel Berchtesgadner Hof after World War II and gave it back to the government of Bavaria in excellent condition in 1995. In one of the saddest footnotes to post-WW2 history, and because of its Nazi past, the German government allowed the hotel to deteriorate and to be looted by marauding bands of vandals (the nearby Geiger Hotel as well) and in 2006 what remainded of the historic hotel was torn down. The same fate will soon befall the Deutscher Hof in Nürnberg, where Hitler stayed during the Nazi Party Days.
The 8-3/4 x 12 inch, 36 page, very heavily illustrated soft cover booklet we offer here was printed in 1941 for the Nazi Party’s Hotelbetriebsgesellschaft which operated the Berchtesgadener Hof to explain the acquisition of the property, expansion, renovation and the history of the Berchtesgaden area.
Pictures show Hitler and other Nazis at the grand re-opening and there is an ad on the back cover for the Hotel Deutscher Hof in Nürnberg. There are pictures of the Reichschancellery just outside Berchtesgaden, the grave of Dietrich Eckart, the local Hitler Youth hostel, etc.
There is minor damage to the bottom corner of the inside pages at the spine, but no damage to photos or text. A rare booklet in nice condition.
