The German equivalent of USO entertainment for troops of the Waffen-SS and the Wehrmacht was the Truppenbetreuung der KdF or “Troop-Care Units” of the KdF section of the Deutsche Arbeitsfront. Organized by Dr. Robert Ley along lines similar to the American USO, the little-known KdF Truppenbetreuung had facilities in about 50 cities from Bordeaux and Paris in France and Tobruk in Africa to Rovaniemi in Finland, and from Naples in Italy to Kursk and Krasnodar deep in the Soviet Union.
Well-run by DAF Oberdienstleiter Dr. Bodo Lafferentz and his staff in Berlin and with over 1000 artists participating, the KdF Truppenbetreuung brought Front Theater to German troops everywhere.
In addition to going to the front to entertain combat troops, many tens of thousands of combat troops were given leave and taken by the KdF Truppenbetreuung to venues like Wagner Festspielhaus in Bayreuth to be entertained as “Guests of the Führer”.
The 9-1/2 x 9-1/2 inch, 88 page very heavily illustrated hard cover book we offer here is called Die NS-Gemeinschaft Kraft durch Freude im Kriegsjahr 1942 (The National Socialist Community Strength through Joy in the War Year 1942) and was printed for the DAF by Dr. Cantz’sche Druckerei in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt, Germany probably in 1943. This example bears the rare stamp of the Haupt-Archiv of the Nazi Party as well as a subsequent stamp of a postwar Allied book archive somewhere.
With many dozens of big, rare color and black & white photos, this book documents the travel and activities of the KdF Truppenbetreuung in 1942 - even showing a KdF Chevrolet school bus they used to reach remote destinations. They made good use of beautiful German actresses, singers and dancers to entertain not only the German troops, but their Italian allies and troops of the Spanish “Blue Division” as well.
They took care of the wounded, guided tours for troops on leave and brought in musicians as famous as Wilhelm Furtwängler.
This is a great, heavily illustrated book on a little-known subject regarding the German Armed Forces during World War II. There is plenty of material in the book for a series of articles of a whole new book on the subject.
Very good condition.
