This is a nice example of the 8 x 10-1/2 inch, 160 page, very, very heavily illustrated hard cover book Balkenkreuz über Wüstensand (The Balkan Cross over Desert Sand) subtitled “A Color Picture Book of the German Africa Corps” as published by Gerhard Stalling Verlag in Oldenburg, Germany in 1943.
Following a brief introduction by Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel, this book consists of about 100 large, clear photos (60+ of which are in color) of the Deutsche Afrikakorps in action as shot by a Luftwaffe war correspondent company.
One of the best German color photo documents of World War II, the photographic material covers all aspects of the German war effort in Africa from aircraft to tanks, ships, weapons, personnel, prisoners and captured enemy equipment. Nice color shots of Rommel, Hauptmann Hans-Joachim Marseille, General der Flieger Geißler, General Fröhlich, etc.
The spine of this used example of Balkenkreuz über Wüstensand is taped and the front and back covers have yellowed with age (see picture above), however the content is in good condition.
