If you google Welish, or follow the threads on the chat rooms on the internet these days, you will find a lot of information about the heroic German stand at Velizh (Welish - in German) in the Smolensk region and the awful price a Soviet Division paid in their battle with a German Grenadier Regiment during the winter war on the Russian front in 1941 / 1942. Under the command of General Adolf Sinzinger, the Germans held on in a heroic defense for which their commander won the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes (Knights Cross of the Iron Cross).
This rare original 5-3/4 x 8 inch, 52 page soft cover well-illustrated history of the operation was published on East Front paper by Panzer-Propagandakompanie 697 using the facilities of PK-Frontdruckerei "Panzerfaust". The entire title of the book is Welish - Aus dem Heldenkampf einer deutschen Kampfgruppe im Winterfeldzug 1941/42 and it was written by Kriegsberichter Peter Kustermann.
Inside the front cover of the book is a note written by one of the men of the unit on the back of a piece of a German Russian Front map, when he sent this example of the book to a woman named Grete on 10 September 1943.
