CONCERTS BY REQUEST FOR THE WEHRMACHT
|
This is a very nice 1940 First Edition of Wir beginnen das Wunschkonzert für die Wehrmacht or “We Are Starting the Musical Request Concert for the Armed Forces” by Heinz Goedecke and Wilhelm Krug.
The introduction by author and journalist Ministerialdirigent Alfred-Ingemar Berndt (a protégé of Dr. Joseph Goebbels and also the Deputy of Reichspressechef der NSDAP Otto Dietrich, and later Aide de Camp to Field Marshal Erwin Rommel) explains that the idea of creating concerts based upon requests by members of the Wehrmacht grew out of the existing Wunschkonzerte for the WHW charity organized by Dr. Joseph Goebbels. By the end of the year 1939, twenty-four of these Wehrmacht concerts had been broadcast and modern radio service had made it possible for 80 million German citizens to enjoy them as well.

This book was produced as a commemorative of the popular Wunschkonzert für die Wehrmacht concept and contains a collection of popular songs, poems, stories and letters that aired on the radio in Nazi Germany, requested by Nazi soldiers.
Interspersed in the text are funny illustrations, pictures of soldiers playing music and listening to music on Volksempfänger radios, volunteers processing the piles of requests by members of the Wehrmacht, U-Boot commander Günther Prien and his crew during a concert at the Berlin Wintergarten, violinist Barnabas von Géczy, Zarah Leander performing during a broadcast, etc.

During the broadcasts many of the poems and stories were performed by famous actors of the time and some of them are shown in black & white photos - Heinrich George, Marika Rökk, Willy Fritsch, Willy Birgel, Paul Hörbiger, Wilhelm Strienz, Hans Moser, Grethe Weiser, Maria Ney, Jenny Jugo, Hans Söhnker, and others.
This 5-5/8 x 9 inch, 226-page First Edition of Wir beginnen das Wunschkonzert für die Wehrmacht was published by SS Publishing House Nibelungen-Verlag in 1940. The 84 year old book is in very nice used condition with a laminated cover and has no odor.
