The Stars & Stripes newspaper is unique in journalism. It was conceived by a Spanish-American war veteran, written, managed, published and distributed by American Expeditionary Forces enlisted men, and came out once a week in France from February 8, 1918 until June 13, 1919. |
|
|
|
It continued to be published in Washington DC after World War I and is still in circulation to this day. |

By the mid 1920s it had become clear
that the original Stars & Stripes papers published in France had not been saved
by the Doughboys and Marines that
received them, but had been used up
for other purposes. This set of Stars &
Stripes newspaper in book form was
printed to meet the demand from
veterans for reprints of all of the
original papers.

The owner of the Stars & Stripes was the National Tribune and they did a spectacular job of reproducing every page of every issue of the Stars & Stripes that had been published in France. The 71 issues of the paper can not be told from originals except for the fact that they are bound into a huge 568 page, 16 x 21 inch hardcover book over 1 inch thick! Every headline, every feature, every article and every ad is there, reproduced in beautifully clear black ink on better paper than has ever been available in France.
While it is natural that the bulk of the news in these Stars & Stripes newspapers is of a wartime and immediate postwar nature, there is also world news, sporting news and advertising for everything from the original Trenchcoat to cigarettes, cameras, military band instruments and Wrigleys chewing gum. |

This book is a crucial piece of research material for anyone dealing with the history of the period of World War I, The War To End All Wars. We do not know where one might find another example of this book and we are certain it would not be possible to find a better one!
On the flyleaf inside the front cover, the original veteran-owner of this book (and the person to whom the book was originally shipped) has pasted a photograph of himself, in uniform, taken in France in 1917. The flyleaf also bears his book plate with the name Christian M. Grastvedt. Sergeant Grastvedts service data is written by hand below his photo. |
