Sport und Staat (Sports and the Nation) explains the development of physical exercise from the standpoint of National Socialism or the Nazi Party. The Foreword is followed by a portrait of Adolf Hitler facing a patriotic quote about the importance of a powerful and healthy body and mind. This is followed by sport-related introductions by Minster of the Interior Dr. Wilhelm Frick, Nazi propaganda Minister Dr. Joseph Goebbels and Reichssportführer Hans von Tschammer und Osten, facing their full-page portraits.
The text by Alfred Baeumler covers the basic principles of sport in Nazi Germany. It stresses the importance of physical well-being but also the building of character and social skills that come with playing sports.
Above and below, pictures from the 1933
SA-Sportfest (SA Sport Competition) in Nuremberg.
Pictured are gymnastics, fencing, soccer, rugby, cricket, javelin, shot-put, running, boxing, wrestling, swimming, water polo, tennis, golf, field hockey and ice hockey, tennis, skiing, skating, curling, bobsledding, shooting, rowing, sailing, mountain climbing, bicycle racing, sailplane flying, sailing and others.
Sport und Staat has chapters on organized sport activities in Nazi Germany, physical education in ancient Greece, German physical education in the Middle Ages, and an overview of current sport possibilities in Nazi Germany. It is explained that to play some of these sports a club had to be joined, and some could be accessed by joining a paramilitary organization such as the SS, SA, HJ, NSFK, BdM, etc.
Sport und Staat was published in 1934 by order of Reichssportführer Hans von Tschammer und Osten and Alfred Baeumler, Arno Breitmeyer, and Parteigenosse (Pg or Party Member) Hoffmann assembled all the information. The 7 x 10-½ inch brown linen hardcover book has gold blocking on the front cover and spine and has 156 pages plus the large fold-out photo in the back.
This nearly 90 year old hardcover Nazi book is complete and in very nice, little-used condition. It has a tight spine and no odor.
There are individual illustrations and dozens of tipped-in pictures interspersed in the text. They are pasted in as in Third Reich cigarette card collector albums. They are all there and the original owner of this book did a very tidy job of pasting them in. The frequently missing fold-out photo of the Feste der Volksgemeinschaft inside the back cover is also there and is in very nice condition (shown below).
This fine complete example of Sport und Staat is ** SOLD **
