 This is an absolutely authentic letter from Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler’s personal office (Chancellery) in Berlin to SS-Gruppenführer and Gauleiter of Wien (Vienna) Josef Bürckel in Wien. |
|
|
|
The letter is dated 31 October 1938 and invited SS-Gruppenführer Bürckel to a meeting with the Führer, Adolf Hitler on 8 November 1938. The meeting was scheduled to take place at the Führerheim (Headquarters) of SS-Standarte “Deutschland” in München (Munich) at 15:00 (3 pm).
The one-sided letter measures 21 x 29.8 cm (8-1/4 x 11-11/16 inches) and was once filed in a two-ring binder (see punch holes). The letterhead shows that it originated from the Personal-Kanzlei or Personal Chancellery of Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler’s office at SS and Gestapo headquarters at Prinz Albrecht-Straße 9 in Berlin SW11. |

The letter was written and signed by SS-Gruppenführer Walter Schmitt (1879 - 1945), Chief of Staff of Heinrich Himmler’s personal office. |
|
|
| Schmitt was a native of Hamburg, a World War I veteran (and POW) and member of the NSDAP from August 1931. He joined the SS in February of 1932. He was a member of the Reichstag (Parliament) and recipient of a Gold Party Badge. In 1942 he became a SS-Obergruppenführer and General of the Waffen-SS and died with that rank in Czechoslovakia in 1945. |

This letter was sent to the office of Gauleiter of Vienna, SS-Gruppenführer Bürckel where it was received on 2 November 1938. The purple “receiving” rubber stamp also shows that Bürckel was the “Reichskommissar for the Reunification of Austria and Greater Germany”. |

|
As most collectors know, anything sent from Reichsführer-SS Himmler’s office during the Third Reich is now virtually impossible to obtain. That this letter was sent to a Gauleiter regarding a meeting with Hitler and that it is hand signed by a SS-General add greatly to its uniqueness, collector value, and its value as an investment. |
