| Schlag Nach! translates as “Look It Up!” and using that name booklets and maps for civilians and military personnel were published in Nazi Germany by the Bibliographisches Institut AG in Leipzig. |
This lot consists of TWO Schlag Nach! information booklets about the Soviet Union, Ukraine and the Baltic countries Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and the western part of Belarus and a map of the Soviet Union (UdSSR). The Tornisterschrifte and the map were published for the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW) Department of Domestic Maps in Berlin in 1941. They are marked For use inside the Wehrmacht or Armed Forces only. |
The 5-3/4 x 8-1/4 inch, 32-page Schlag nach über den Sowjetunion (Heft 53) has chapters explaining in plain language its size, population, form of government, education system, armed forces, agriculture, industry, economy, exports, its history and rulers.
Tornisterschrift 49, Die Ukraine und das Baltenland, has 16 pages with text written by Dr. Robert Stupperich. Chapters cover the history and population of Ukraine ("the largest population group in Europe without an independent state") and its economy. There is similar information about the Baltic countries with an additional chapter about “the Year of Bolshevism”, as a result of the Soviet occupation.

All three 80+ year old items, produced before the start of the Wehrmacht invasion of eastern Europe and before the Baltic countries became Reichskommissariat Ostland, are in very good little-used condition and have no odor. The two booklets are marked with the urgent suggestion not to keep them, to pass them on within the military service after digesting the information (Nicht sammeln, sondern weitergeben!).
