This is a very rare original 1935 example of the superb Nazi photo book Hinter den Kulissen des Reichsparteitag-Films by Leni Riefenstahl, a “look behind the scenes” of the making of her famous movie Triumph des Willens (Triumph of the Will), filmed during the 1934 Reichsparteitag or Nazi Party Days in Nuremberg, at the request of Adolf Hitler.

The 7-¾ x 10 inch, 106-page softcover book starts with a foreword by Leni Riefenstahl dated December 1934 (shown right) in which she thanks Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Frankenführer Julius Streicher and Oberbürgermeister Willy Liebel for their help in making her famous movie. A few pages of text follow with background information on the work and challenges faced by her team while making the movie during the enormous event, and then a recap of the work performed every day from Wednesday 5 September - 10 September 1934.

In true professional movie making form, Riefenstahl gives full credit to her many co-workers on the film on two beautifully typeset pages in the book (below), where she also thanks film studios UfA, Tobis-Melo, FoR and Paramount.

The remaining 75 pages of Hinter den Kulissen des Reichsparteitag-Films contain photos with captions of Leni Riefenstahl at work: planning film locations and angles, set-up preparations before the Reichsparteitag started and coordinating filming during the Nazi Party Days with organizers of the rally, as well as filming Hitler’s arrival in the City of Nazi Party Days by airplane and his subsequent drive through the city in an open armored Grosse Mercedes-Benz (Der Führer kommt!”). SA gatherings, torchlight parades, RAD marches, the Hitler Youth camp, Sepp Dietrich and his LSSAH, the SS and Feldjäger military police music corps (above), etc. etc. were also filmed and included in this book.

There are photos of Riefenstahl, Adolf Hitler, Frankenführer Julius Streicher, Nuremberg Mayor Willy Liebel, architect Albert Speer at work, SA Stabschef Viktor Lutze, Deputy Führer Rudolf Hess, Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Gauleiter Wagner, Hermann Göring, Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, Hitler’s adjutant Wilhelm Brückner, Reichsleiter Alfred Rosenberg, Reichsminister Hans Frank, RAD leader Konstantin Hierl, Baldur von Schirach, Dr. Robert Ley, Riefenstahl’s co-worker [famous German cinematographer] Sepp Allgeier, huge swastika banners, Nazi eagles and swastikas, the enormous HJ tent camp, etc., etc.

Published by the Central Publishing House of the Nazi Party, Zentralverlag der NSDAP Franz Eher Nachfolger and printed by the Buchgewerbehaus M. Müller in Munich in 1935, this example of Hinter den Kulissen des Reichsparteitag-Films comes with its original dust jacket which is not in perfect condition. The damage to the upper right hand corner is obvious in the photo near the top of this USMBOOKS web page. Otherwise the pages are in remarkable condition for their age.

This very rare 89 year old Nazi photo book is in nice used condition and has no offensive odor whatsoever.
