This simple, classic white china bowl was produced by Kaestner Saxonia in Oberhohndorf near the East German city of Zwickau in 1938. Over the years we have seen perhaps a hundred pieces of tableware produced by this company for the Nazi Labor Service marked Reichsarbeitsdienst for every piece of Reichsautobahn china. This piece was made for use in a Reichsautobahn Raststätte or Nazi freeway rest and service area restaurant such as the well-known one on the picturesque Chiemsee (shown below for reference) along Hitler’s freeway connecting Munich with Salzburg.

The German Kaestner Saxonia Porzellan company was founded in 1882 and experienced its most profitable years during the Third Reich. After World War II the company was nationalized, and during the communist DDR years sales slowly declined and the porcelain factory closed its doors in 1971.

The diameter of this fine little-used Kaestner Saxonia Reichsautobahnen bowl is 8-½ inches (215 mm), the height is 3-¼ inches (83 mm) and it weighs 2 pounds 10 oz (1.2 kg). As you can see in our photos, there is one tiny chip or manufacturing defect inside the ridge the bottom of the bowl sits on, otherwise this 84 year old Kaestner Saxonia Reichsautobahnen bowl is in very fine condition. No cracks, no crazing and very, very little wear from use inside the bowl.

We purchased this rare original piece of Third Reich Reichsautobahn Porzellan near a freeway exit between Salzburg and Vienna in the 1980s. Where would you find another example in this fine condition?
