Every issue of Ostland, Monatsschrift des Reichskommissars für das Ostland also contained advertising by German companies which had opened permanent headquarters in the Reichskommissariat, and ethnic German firms well-established in the Ostland. This 78 year old Nazi magazine has advertising by chemical, pharmaceutical, construction and mining companies, including the Ostland branch of the Reichswerke Hermann Göring conglomerate.
Reichskommissariat Ostland was the German name for their administration in occupied Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as well as the western part of and Soviet Belarus, established after the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941. Many Third Reich historians and collectors are familiar with the Nazi magazine Böhmen und Mähren published in Prague after Bohemia and Moravia became a part of Hitler’s Germany. Ostland, is a similar high-quality, heavily illustrated Nazi monthly magazine focussing on the former Baltic states. Publication started in July 1942 and Reichskommissar Hinrich Lohse was the publisher and Dr. Walter Zimmermann (Pressechef des Reichskommissariats für das Ostland) was the editor.

Reichsleiter Alfred Rosenberg
Nazi east front war correspondent art
This magazine has coverage of Reichsleiter Rosenberg’s official visit to Reichskommissariat Ostland from 14 - 17 February 1944, its purpose and the people he met there. It is accompanied by photos of Rosenberg meeting famous U-Boot captain Wolfgang Lüth (a Baltic German born in Riga, and recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds) and representatives of Lithuanian SS volunteers. Be sure to notice the Lithuanian shield-shaped patch on the right sleeve of the uniform in the photo at the top of this USMBOOKS web page!

Other chapters in this issue are about German soldiers in the East (with striking war correspondent illustrations of Wehrmacht soldiers, Soviet tanks and battlefield scenes), the Danger of the Russians for Europe, Classic and Romantic Paintings from the Ostland, Cultural Events in the Ostland and more.
Reichswerke Hermann Göring
There are color and black & white illustrations of art (including a Kunstbeilage, a tipped-in color illustration on card stock of a painting by Karl Siegmund Walther), aryan songs, new books about or published in the Ostland, and official announcements about promotions, retirements and deaths as well as the names of officials who had been called up for Wehrmacht duty.
