This is the real thing, a genuine Third Reich Nazi Nationalflagge or German State Flag in red with a white circle bearing a black swastika sewed in the middle on both sides. This is a fine example of a Hausflagge or "house flag" of the type ordinary Germans bought to hang in their window or from a relatively short window flag pole. It was brought back to the United States at the end of World War II by an American GI.
The flag is very well-made of woven cotton 80 centimeters (31 inches) wide like many modest sized German flags and banners of the period. The 43 cm (17 inch) diameter round white circles were sewed to the center of the red flag with tight zig-zag machine stitches. The black swastika was printed on the white center, before it was sewed on.
The white center on the back side was signed in ink by three World War II American GIs, Charles E. Stewart, Willard Crowder (1703 W. 12. Street, Muncie, Indiana) and Paul Dammeier (3118 Hanna, Fort Wayne, Indiana).
The flag measures 80 x 150 cm (31-¼ x 59 inches). One end has a 3-3/8 inch open-ended hem so that a pole could be inserted through it. This was a very standard type of flag sold in Germany during the Third Reich so that it could be used on a standard household flag pole (as shown in the photo below) or suspended from a horizontal bar as a banner.
There are minor spots on the flag, typical of any Third Reich German flag that was used and they are perfectly consistent with most approximately 75 years old Nazi flags. There are two small holes along the horizontal center line on the right hand side of the flag where the veteran probably pinned a Nazi medal or insignia of some kind. They certainly would not detract from the display of this authentic Third Reich flag in a museum or collection.
Original Nazi swastika flags in nice condition in this desirable size are very hard to find these days.
