There are plenty of Third Reich books about German police but few that come close to being he equal of Die Polizei einmal anders! (The Police - From A Different Angle!). The 6 x 8-¾ inch, 240-page, heavily illustrated hardcover book truly does examine the police from another angle or perspective as the title says.
The book has an introduction by Reichsführer-SS and Chief of German Police Heinrich Himmler and the text was compiled from the German press during the Day of German Police, and published in 1937 by the Central Publishing House of the Nazi Party, Franz Eher Nachfolger of Munich.
The various chapters deal with every aspect of the police and their work in protecting the population of the country. The articles cover a very wide range of subjects from the work of Reinhard Heydrich in the Hochschule der Kriminalisten to the bureaucracy that supported the men in the field. There are lots of photographs of detectives, of the aftermath of crime, of police on the job, criminals being apprehended, reward posters, the fire protection police, lost children, rounding up the usual suspects, dragging a river for a corps, highway police, even a cop pointing out a sign to a farmer which say, "Farm Animals Forbidden".
Our favorite though (shown left), has to be a policeman explaining to a shop girl that she is in violation of the law because she has a container of sauerkraut too close to a container of petroleum!
A lot of the photos show the police and their field uniforms of great coats, shakos, and long bayonets. There are photos of Gendarmes measuring the length of fish caught by fishermen, checking for fishing licenses and making sure that animals were not mistreated.
There are troops of marching policemen, Technische Nothilfe (TeNo) units at work (shown above), and lots of information about the modern technical equipment of the cops (police radios, for example). The book also talks about spies, police laboratories, the court system, and the rewards of being a policeman.
Die Polizei einmal anders! is a very rare and very difficult to find Third Reich book. This 86 year old hardcover example is in very good, tight condition. The buyer will receive the book shown at the top of this USMBOOKS web page as well as a modern, professional facsimile of the original Third Reich dust jacket, shown directly above right.
For reference at the left, we show this book on permenent display at the SS Museum at Heinrich Himmler's Wewelsburg Castle.
