STAR ALBUMS FROM 1936

As with most fields of the arts, movie studios and their products were carefully controlled by the Reichsfilmkammer or State Motion Picture Chamber of the Reichskulturkammer (RKK or State Chamber of Culture). From September 1933, the RKK exercised complete organizational and administrative power over, “all forms of artistic creation or activity which are made public” and “all activities as soon as they appear in print, in films, or are transmitted through the air”.

The RKK and its subsidiary chambers were run by a collaboration of the State Ministry of Economics (Reichswirtschaftsministerium at Wilhelmplatz 1/2 in Berlin, Walther Funk, State Minister from 1937 onward) and the State Ministry for National Community Clarification and Publicity (Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda at Wilhelmplatz 8/9 in Berlin, Dr. Joseph Goebbels, State Minister). The President of the RKK was Dr. Goebbels, who appointed the Vice President and Secretary.

The two 9-1/8 x 12-1/8 inch books we offer here are the first and second volumes of Bunte Filmbilder (Colorful Movie Pictures), published in 1936 by Cigaretten Bilderdienst in Dresden, which made the pictures pasted in the books available to smokers of Zuban No. 6 cigarettes. Each volume contains about 150 small, colorful pictures and 100 big colorful pictures for a total of about 300 small pictures and 200 big pictures.

One of the movie stars depicted in several of the pictures in these books is Lida Baarova (shown top right) who was one corner of a love triangle involving Dr. Joseph Goebbels and his wife Magda Goebbels. Adolf Hitler had to step in to put an end to the relationship of Joseph Goebbels with Baarova. See David Irving’s 1996 book “Goebbels: Mastermind of the Third Reich” for more details.

Among the movie stars shown in the remarkably lifelike and colorful photos in these books are Leni Riefenstahl, Lida Baarova, Lilian Harvey, Shirley Temple, Marlene Dietrich, Zarah Leander, Sonja Henie, Marianne Hoppe, Marika Rokk, Renate Müller, Pola Negri, Paula Wessely, Brigitte Horney, Jenny Jugo, Carol Lombard, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, Maureen O’Sullivan, Alice Faye, Claudette Colbert, Norma Shearer, Loretta Young, Willi Fritsch, Hans Albers, Leo Slezak, Karl Valentin, Maurice Chevalier, Heinz Rümann, Emil Jannings, Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, Robert Young, Larry Crabbe, Laurel & Hardy, etc.

All of the pictures that belong in these books are there and the books are in exceptionally good condition for their approximately 70 years of age.
