The 6-5/8 x 9-1/2 inch, 176-page hardcover book has 48 pages of full-page photos of Wehrmacht motorcycle troops, Nazi tanks, Nazi machine gun troops at the Metaxa Line, destroyed bunkers, Luftwaffe Stuka attacks, Wehrmacht Pioniere repairing a damaged bridge, heavy Waffen-SS artillery, Gebirgsjäger hoisting the Reichskriegsflagge on Mount Olympus, Serbian and Australian POWs, Flak artillery, Nazi cavalry men on horseback, Kriegsmarine Matrosen at the Acropolis in Athens, the end of the British cruiser York, Nazi paratroopers jumping over Corinth Canal and conquering Crete.
This is a fine hardcover First Edition of Von den Karawanken bis Kreta by Uli Huber and published for the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW) in 1941, complete with its original dust jacket. Karawanken is the name of a mountain range just south of the Austrian border in Yugoslavia, and the chapters in this book cover the German Wehrmacht advances during the 1941 Balkan campaign south of the Danube river in Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Greece all the way to the island of Crete.
The introduction starts by stating that the German people are aware that the Balkan campaign was actually a war provoked by England, fought against England and lost by England. Germany was only interested in a peaceful, prosperous south-eastern Europe, helping the people who live there improve their agricultural output and thereby their economic circumstances.
Chapters cover German tank units, Luftwaffe attacks, army troop advances, Kriegsmarine actions in the Adriatic and Aegean Sea, and of course the Fallschirmjäger and Gebirgsjäger at Crete.
This 1941 Nazi book about the Wehrmacht Balkan campaign was published by Zeitgeschichte Verlag Wilhelm Andermann in Berlin (the same company that published the Heinrich Hoffmann photo books) for the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW).
It is a fine hardcover First Edition (1 to 50,000) of Von den Karawanken bis with a linen spine in very nice, little used condition. It has a tight spine and no odor. The dust jacket is an 83 year old original with scotch tape repairs on the inside along the top and bottom edges.
The end papers are maps that show Der Schauplatz des Balkan-Feldugs perfectly, and Von den Karawanken bis Kreta also has a fold-out map that shows very well the spring 1941 Wehrmacht advances through the Balkans.
Also for sale on USMBOOKS.com, an original World War II color map that includes the southeastern Europe war zone described in this book. We are happy to combine shipping of multiple purchases!
